1294313 Making battery plate grids; rolling JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 10 March 1970 [2 April 1969] 17163/69 Headings B3A and B3M A method of making a lead battery plate grid having upper 15, lower 16 and a pair of side members 13 and 14, the upper member having an integral lug 17, and integral ribs 17a, 18 and 19 interconnecting the frame members, comprises the step of passing a strip of lead 11 between a pair of roughened rolls 12 which contain an impression of the grid and which are lubricated so that during formation of the grid there will be a build up of lead on the inlet side of the rolls 12 when the lead requirement for forming the grid is low, the built up lead then flowing automatically, when the upper 15 and lower 16 frame members and lug 17 are being formed, to assist in the formation of the upper and lower frame members and lug. After the grid is rolled the fillets of lead between the ribs, and between the ribs and frame members are removed by cropping. The lubricating of rolls 12 is effected by means of felt pads 24 acting on the rolls to provide petroleum spirit. The surfaces of the rolls may be roughened by vapour blasting.
