Abstract:
Prodn. of high pressure gases for driving a pneumatically operated energy source, partic. for starting aircraft jet engines in flight in an emergency or on the ground where no starting equipment is available, comprises (i) storing a quantity of liquefied gas (I) esp. N2 (ii) storing a quantity of solid heat-storing material (II) in a vessel, (iii) heating (II) to convert it to its liquid phase, (iv) transferring a quantity of (I) into the storage vessel for bringing it into heat conducting contact with the liquefied (II) in order to evaporate it within the vessel and to cause (II) to solidify the transport of the vapour of (I) from the storage vessel to an energy source operated by pressure. Provides a convenient and compact arrangement for producing pneumatic energy on board an aircraft for conversion in emergency to electrical and hydraulic energy and for driving the air turbine to start up jet engines.
