Abstract:
Process comprises (a) polishing, degassing and buffing; (b) surface activation; (c) chemically surface treating the surface to obt. a surface suitable for electroplating; (d) forming several layers of electroplated nickel and (e) forming a layer of electroplated chromium. A layer of electroplated Cu can be used between the Ni layers, followed by polishing and buffing; an org. degreasant is pref. used and (b) pref. uses HNO3 soln. The finished coating may consist of (I) 15 plus-or-minus 5 mu Ni and 0.3 plus-or-minus 0.1 mu Cr; or (II) 8 plus-or-minus mu Cu plus 8 plus-or-minus 3 mu Ni and 0.3 plus-or-minus 0.1 mu Cr. Used as decorative interior panels; mirrors for bathrooms; and side and rear mirrors for cars. Prods. can replace glass mirrors; can be shaped, bent, punched and cut; and have high-thermal shock resistance and high corrosion resistance.
