Abstract:
The cell comprises anode and cathode sepd. by >=2 non-conducting layers which may be of porous material, such as paper, felt or plastic material. Conducting particles, in beds 20mm thick, supported by grating are held between alternate non-conducting layers so that the conducting layers are sepd. by 0.5-2.0 mm. Electrolyte circulation may be parallel to the layers or perpendicular to them. Device permits higher volumetric efficiency and consumes less energy per unit of prod. than cells using flat or cylindrical electrodes, and gives rapid circulation and good mixing of electrolyte. Rapid sepn. of reaction prods. is possible with consequent redn. in harmful sec. reactions.
