Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPS5113909
Kind Code:
B1
Abstract:
1,246,581. Heat exchangers; fluid heaters. RAYTHEON CO. 9 Jan., 1969 [24 Jan., 1968; 14 June, 1968], No. 1478/69. Headings F4A and F4S. A fluid permeable matrix comprising a plurality of layers of thermally conductive elements having surface areas predominantly convexly curved in all directions, e.g. spheres, is disposed in a fluid passage, and the average length of the flow paths through the matrix is not greater than 15 times the average radius of curvature of the matrix elements. In Fig. 1, for example, the transverse flow path through the matrix is provided by 6 or 7 layers of spherical matrix elements 31. These may be of copper, brass, stainless or carbon steel, aluminium, or of plastics material embedded with metal particles; and the elements of the matrix structure may be bonded together. Fig. 1 shows a water heater in which a tube coil 30 is embedded in an annular matrix defining a combustion space 38 for an air-gas mixture supplied through passageways 35 of a burner plate 34. A further burner-fired construction using straight tubes in which an unspecified fluid is heated, is described (Figs. 8, 9). Another embodiment (Figs. 10, 11) comprises two concentric tubular passages each containing a matrix, a fluid (unspecified) being heated or vaporized in the outer passage by heat from an oxygen-gas flame in the inner passage. In a further embodiment only briefly described (Fig. 12), and said to be applicable to steam generation and in condensers, the matrix (91) surrounds a helical tube coil having in its fluid passage a mass (92) of particles such as mesh, wires, shavings or cuttings.
