1,273,955. Dexamethasone 17-valerate. INSTITUTO LUSO FARMACO D'ITALIA S.r.L. 19 April, 1971 [14 March, 1970], No. 23992/71. Heading C2U. The novel title compound, alternatively named 9α-fluoro-11#,21-dihydroxy-16α-methyl-17α-valeroyloxy-1,4-pregnadiene-3,20-dione, is prepared (1) by acid hydrolysis of 9α-fluoro-11#- hydroxy - 16α - methyl - 17α,21 - (11 - butyl - 11 - methoxy - methylenedioxy) - 1,4 - pregnadiene- 3,20-dione (prepared from dexamethasone and methyl orthovalerate); or (2) by acid hydrolysis of 9α-fluoro- 11#-hydroxy-16α-methyl-17α-valeroyloxy - 21 - acetoxy - 1,4 - pregnadiene - 3,20- dione (prepared from dexamethasone-21-acetate and valeric anhydride) followed by separation of the resulting mono-ester mixture by chromatography. The novel steroid is stated to be an antiinflammatory agent, and it may be made up into pharmaceutical compositions with suitable carriers.
