Abstract:
1452133 Grafted sulphated or sulphonated polyvinyl alcohols KOHJIN CO Ltd 21 Nov 1973 [21 Nov 1972] 53977/73 Headings C3G and C3P [Also in Division D1] A chloro-substituted ethylenically unsaturated aliphatic monomer is grafted in aqueous emulsion on to a sulphated or sulphonated polyvinyl alcohol and the resulting emulsion is mixed with polyvinyl alcohol or a mixture thereof with another water soluble polymer to yield fibre- or film-forming material. Specified monomers, which may be copolymerized with non-chloro containing monomers, are vinyl, vinylidene, allyl and methallyl chlorides. Examples are given in which (a) a saponified sodium vinyl sulphonate-vinyl acetate graft polymer is grafted with vinyl chloride. The resulting emulsion being mixed with aqueous polyvinyl alcohol solution to yield a liquid which is extruded to form fibres, which are acetalized with formaldehyde and dyed; (b) a saponified sodium allyl sulphonate-vinyl acetate copolymer is grafted with vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate, the resulting emulsion being further treated as in (a), except that stannic acid dispersion is added with the polyvinyl alcohol; (c) a sulphonated polyvinyl alcohol prepared by treating brominated polyvinyl alcohol with sodium hydrogen sulphite is grafted with vinylidene chloride, the resulting emulsion being mixed with aqueous solutions of polyvinyl alcohol and polyacrylamide and further treated as in (a); (d) a sulphated polyvinyl alcohol obtained by treating saponified polyvinyl alcohol with sulphuric acid is grafted with vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride, the resulting emulsion being mixed with polyvinyl alcohol solution to form a liquid which is extruded or cast to form films; (e) a saponified sodium methallyl sulphonatevinyl acetate copolymer is grafted with vinyl chloride and vinyl propionate, the resulting emulsion being mixed with polyvinyl alcohol solution and tin oxide and further treated as in (a).
