Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPS5196786
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:
1503843 Membrane separation of weak acids from solution MONSANTO CO 14 Jan 1976 [15 Jan 1975] 01322/76 Heading B1X A weak acid (i.e. with at least 1% of acid molecules undissociated) separated from an aqueous solution by contacting the aqueous feed with a first surface of a non-ionic, synthetic organic polymeric membrane selectively permeable to unionized acid molecules in the absence of a water-insoluble solvent, maintaining the second surface of the membrane at a lower chemical potential than the first by contacting the second surface with an aqueous solution sink (i.e. liquid sweep on permeate side) and permitting a portion of the unionized acid to permeate into and through the membrane to provide a mixture having a higher total concentration of acid moieties (calculated as unionized acid) than that of the aqueous feed. The process is envisaged for use in the recovery of water-soluble organic acids with PKa greater than 3, e.g. aliphatic and fatty acids.
