1280569 6-Aminomethyl steroids UPJOHN CO 21 Oct 1970 [19 Nov 1969] 50030/70 Headings C2C and C2U Novel 6-aminomethyl steroids having in rings A and B the structure (wherein R1 and R2 are each C 1-12 alkyl, C 1-12 hydroxyalkyl, C 3-8 cycloalkyl, C 6-14 aryl, alkaryl or aralkyl or -NR1 R2 is alkyleneimino of 5, 6 or 7 ring members) are prepared by reaction of steroids having in rings A and B the structure (wherein R3 can have the same meanings as R1 ) with the appropriate amine NHR1 R2 or a salt thereof and formaldehyde in the presence of a strong acid but under basic conditions. The steroids may, for example, be of the androstane, 19-nor-androstane, pregnane, 19-nor-pregnane, spirostane, cholestane, ergostane or stigmastane series or retro steroids or D-homo steroids. In some examples a 1α-methoxy group in a starting material is eliminated in the process to give a 1-unsubstituted-#1,4 -product.
