1421107 Nitration of halogenated aromatic compounds MONSANTO CO 8 May 1974 [9 May 1973 20 Aug 1973] 20301/74 Addition to 1420733 Heading C2C Nitro- and halo-substituted aromatic compounds are prepared by contacting a haloaromatic compound with a nitrating agent in a sulphuric acid- and sulphonic acid-free reaction mixture containing a phosphorus compound and a soluble compound of a promoter element which is a polyvalent metal arsenic, selenium or tellurium. Specified phosphorus compounds are phosphoric acids, phosphorus oxides, phosphorus halides, phosphorus oxyhalides, phosphorous acids and organophosphorus compounds. Specified polyvalent metals are Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Nb, Mo, Ru, Rh, Pd, Sn, Sb, Ce, Pr, Sm, Eu, Er, Tm, Yb, W, Re, Os, Ir, Pt, Au, Hg, Tl, Pb, Bi, Po, Pa, and U.
