1315789 Master cylinders SOC ANON DBA 16 Dec 1971 [30 Dec 1970] 58420/71 Heading F2F An hydraulic master cylinder for a clutch operating mechanism comprises a piston 26 slidable in a bore 20 to define a variable volume chamber 30 which is connected to an outlet port 32 via a one-way valve, formed by an annular member 42 and seat 46, means for actuating the valve to an open position, in the form of a sleeve 48, when the piston is moved inwards a predetermined distance and a ball 50 urged by a spring 54 to engage a groove 56 or 58 in sleeve 48 to retain the sleeve in one of two positions. The action of the mechanism is such that if the inward travel of the piston is less than a predetermined amount the valve remains closed and the piston slow to return. On the other hand a greater stoke causes the sleeve to be latched in a position which keeps the valve open.
