Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPS5422449
Kind Code:
B2
Abstract:
1445498 Recovering used lubricating oils M FAINMAN and C S MCAULEY 25 July 1974 [30 July 1973] 32969/74 Heading C5E Used lubricating oils are treated by diluting with a hydrocarbon liquid diluent, mixing the diluted oil with a mixture of water and an alcohol, (which alcohol has a water solubility of at least 20% by volume) containing an amount of an acid sufficient to displace polyvalent metal ions from metallic soaps in the oil, and centrifuging the mixture to separate the diluted oil phase from the alcohol-water phase and sludge. In examples used automobile crankcase oils are treated using naphtha, kerosene, xylene or dehydrated overhead from the oils, as diluents; ethanol, isopropanol or tert-butanol as the alcohol; and hydrochloric, sulphuric, nitric, phosphoric, formic or acetic acids as the acid. The process can be used to treat used oils which have been previously treated by the process of Specification 1,445,264 which is similar to that of the present invention except that an ammonium or alkali metal base is used instead of acid.
