Kind Code:
B1
Abstract:
1310240 Multi-axle drives O MUELLER 12 May 1970 [12 May 1969] 23015/70 Heading B7H [Also in Division F2] To allow selection of the ratio of the torque transmitted to front and rear axles 14, 16, respectively, in a four wheel drive vehicle, Fig. 1, or six wheel drive vehicle, Fig. 3 (not shown), the rear axle is driven direct from the transmission 26 and the front axle is driven through an hydraulic clutch 28, Figs. 5 and 9, comprising three sets of pistons 132, 134 and 136 in three sets of radial cylinders 126, 128 and 130 in a driving member 90 and abutting a cam 112 on a driven shaft 30, each set of cylinders being connected by lines 140, 142 and 144 via a relief valve to a line 160 which is controlled by a manually adjustable throttle valve including a ball 172. The ball is urged against its seat by a plunger 196 in a sleeve 206 and spring urged away from a second plunger 194 axially positioned in the sleeve by a screw 208 for which a manual wrench 210 is provided. The sleeve 206 is splined in a chamber 174 in the driving member 90 to rotate with the member. An overriding manual control is provided to lock-up the clutch during drive by moving the sleeve 206 axially to completely close the ball 172 against its seat. the override control acts on the sleeve through a bearing 214 and comprises a sleeve 236 moved axially by a yoke 234 on a shaft 226 rotated by axial movement of a rod 218 acting through a pair of levers 222. The complete unit is air-free and filled with hydraulic fluid through an inlet 248 which may be connected to a closed reservoir provided with means (not further described) to compensate for thermal expansion of the fluid. In the six wheel drive, the front tandem axle is driven direct and the rear tandem axle is driven through a second similar hydraulic clutch.
