1439286 Flexible hose IMPERIAL-EASTMAN CORP 23 Aug 1973 [20 Nov 1972] 40073/73 Heading F2P A method of making a flexible hose includes the steps of softening the outer portion of a tubular core 11 formed of a polyurethane resin by subjecting the outer portion to a fluid polyurethane solvent 13, applying a reinforcing layer 12 under tension about the softened outer portion of the core 11, and setting the softened outer portion of the core 11 with at least a portion of the reinforcing layer embedded therein to secure mechanically the reinforcing layer to the core. As described the polyurethane tubular core 11 (Fig. 2) is first passed through a bath of the solvent 13, e.g. tetrahydrofuran, which may be at room temperature or at an elevated temperature and which may have a small percentage of the polyurethane resin dissolved therein. The reinforcing layer 12 is then applied to the softened core 14, the layer 12 consisting of metallic or other fibres, e.g. polyester fibres, and being applied to the core by a braiding machine 15. Alternatively the fibrous reinforcing layer 12 may be helically wound on to the softened core. The solvent is then evaporated at room temperature or by passing the reinforced core 16 through an oven 17. The hose may be provided with an outer sheath of polyurethane by passing the reinforced core through a bath 28 (Fig. 6) containing polyurethane resin dissolved in a solvent, evaporating the solvent in an oven 30 to leave a coating 31 of polyurethane on the reinforcing layer and then extruding an outer sheath 27 on the hose by an extruder 32. In a modification the hose is provided with two reinforcing layers 12, 18 by first wrapping a strip 19 (Fig. 4) around the reinforced core 10, the strip 19 of polyurethane having been passed through a bath of solvent 20 to soften it, then applying a second reinforcing layer 18 by a braiding machine 24 and then evaporating the solvent by an oven 25. An outer sheath is then applied as described above to provide the finished hose.
