Abstract:
1453485 Polymerisation apparatus DU PONT OF CANADA Ltd 4 March 1974 [5 March 1973] 9671/74 Heading B1X [Also in Division C3] An apparatus for continuously preparing a polyamide prepolymer (P) from a reactant solution comprises: heat-exchanger 32 for controllably heating the solution to a predetermined temperature so as partially to vapourize and partially to react the solution to (P) and a vapour (V); vapour-liquid separator 30; recirculating loop 28 from the bottom of separator 30 to the inlet of 32; vapour-pipe 34 from the outlet of 32 to separator 30; means for circulating the liquid from 30 via 32 and 34 back to 30; means for injecting reactant solution (from 24) into loop 28; and vent valve 46 for maintaining a controlled pressured in separator 30 by releasing vapour therefrom. The circulating means may be a pump, or, together with heatexchanger 32, may be in the form of a thermosyphon boiler. In addition there may be a reactor 54 which (P) from 30 enters via 48, 50, and 52, and in which (P) is heated further to react it to a polymer and vapour, which is vented at 58 so as to maintain in reactor 34 a controlled pressure, lower than that in separator 30. The flow of polymer from, and the level in, reactor 54 are controlled. Various means for controlling temperatures and flows are described, as are various modifications of reactor 54.
