1383193 Podocarpic acid derivatives HARIMA KASEI KOGYO KK 25 Sept 1973 [14 March 1973] 44832/73 Heading C2C The invention comprises a method of synthesising (-)-podocarpic acid derivatives wherein (i) a (+)-dehydroabietic acid or derivative thereof is subjected to a retro Friedal Crafts reaction for rearrangement of the A/B ring from the # configuration to the α configuration, (ii) the resulting product is subjected to a catalytic isomerization to rearrange the product from the cisto the trans-form and to a substitution reaction whereby substituents are introduced into the C ring (iii), the resulting product is subjected to a Birch reduction to form a (-)- podocarpic acid derivative have an α # unsaturated carbonyl group on the C ring.
