Japanese Patent JPS5737996
Kind Code:
B2
Abstract:
1452143 Lithium-iodine cell WILSON GREATBATCH Ltd 13 Dec 1973 [5 March 1973] 57806/73 Heading H1B A lithium-iodine cell for implantation in the human body comprises a stainless steel casing 11 of rectangular shape formed from one piece of metal and closed by a stainless steel lid 17 sealed by a weld 56. The casing 11 constitutes the cathode collector, the cathode material 50 being viscous and flowable and comprising a charge transfer complex of an organic material and iodine. The preferred organic material is 2-vinyl pyridine and is an electron donor to give sufficient conductivity, this material being heated and the iodine added thereto. The anode comprises two lithium plates 22, 24 having sandwiched therebetween an anode current collector 26, this assembly being pressed to band the plates together so that the collector is sealed from the cathode material 50. A wire conductor 28 is welded at 30 to the collector 26 and is surrounded by a Teflon (registered trade mark) sheath 32 extending through a stainless steel ferrule 40 welded in an aperture in the lid 17. The assembly 22, 24, 26, 28, 32 is sealed in a Teflon frame 34 so that only the outer surfaces of the lithium plates 22, 24 are exposed to the cathode material 50. A seal between the ferrule 40 and sheath 32 is made by a hollow plug 44 of Teflon and a glass seal 42. The space between the material 50 and lid 17 is filled with epoxy material 54. Lithium iodide electrolyte forms at the surfaces where the plates 22, 24 are exposed to the cathode material 50.
