Abstract:
1391300 Lightning conductors NUCLEAR IBERICA SA 4 Aug 1972 [7 Aug 1971] 36541/72 Heading H2C [Also in Division F2] A lightning conductor comprises a radioactive source 4 disposed on the outer surface of a support 3, a bearing 5 mounted on an earthed rod 1 and provided with arms 6 which support vanes 7 rotatable by the wind, an arm 8 mounted on one of the arms 6 and a brush 9 which bears against the source in order to clean it. A grid or grating 12, which accelerates the ions formed by collision of the alpha particles from the source 4 with air molecules, is mounted on the support 3 by ceramic insulators 13. The source 4 may comprise radium-226 or americium-241 and the brush is pivotally supported on the arm 6 so that at high wind velocities it moves away from the support 3 to prevent excessive wear on the source 4. In a modification, the support 3 and the grid 12 are frusto-conical.
