Abstract:
A shear ram assembly for a blowout preventer has a pair of rams 24, 26 with opposed shear blades 36, 38, means for moving the shear blades 36, 38 across the pipe opening of the blowout preventer, one of the rams 24 having a shoulder 44 spaced from the shearing plane of the blades, a face seal 40 mounted in a recess 42 in the ram 24 having the shoulder 44 and positioned so that the blade 38 on the other ram 26 bends the cut pipe 46 around the shoulder 44 and then seals against said face seal 40, and means 50 for preventing metal parts from collecting in front of said face seal. The rams 24,26 may be inverted to bend the upper end of the lower pipe section.
