Abstract:
PURPOSE:To produce sodium bromate at high current efficiency without using reduction preventive agent, by electrolyzing, using aqueous solution of sodium bromide of which pH is 8.5-10.5 as the anolyte, in an electrolytic cell using cation exchange film. CONSTITUTION:An electrolytic cell is divided into a cathode chamber 1 and an anode chamber 2 by a cation exchange film 5 of fluorine compound. A cathode 3 made from iron, stainless steel, nickel, etc. is disposed in the cathode chamber 1, and an anode 4 made from graphite, Ti, Ta, etc., coated with Pt compound metal or oxide thereof is disposed in the anode chamber 2. The cathode chamber 1 is aqueous solution of sodium bromide, being supplied from filled with water or aqueous solution of electrolyte, and the anode chamber 2 with supply ports 6 and 10, respectively. In this case, NaOH produced in the cathode chamber 1 is added to the anolyte in a circulation cell 13 to adjust pH to 8.5-10.5, and the anolyte is put into the anode chamber 2. In the anode 4, bromine generates and reacts with NaOH added for the purpose of pH adjustment, thereby producing sodium bromate, which is taken out from an outlet 9. Since the cation exchange film 5 exists, the sodium bromate does not contact with the cathode 3, so that reduction preventive agent is not needed.
