PURPOSE: A specific catalyst system is used to effect the reaction between an aromatic amine, carbon monoxide and an organic hydroxyl compound to produce the titled compound used as a carbamate agent for agricultural purpose in high selectivity and yield.

CONSTITUTION: In the production of an aromatic urethane by the reaction between an aromatic amine such as aniline, carbon monoxide and an organic hydroxyl compound such as methanol or ethanol in the presence of molecular oxygen or an organic nitro compound, is used a catalyst system consisting of at least one selected from metals in the platinum group and their compounds such as Pd-Al2O3 and of at least one selected from onium compound containing halogen such as iodine as an anion, e.g., a phosphonium compound of (R1R2R3R4 P+)X- (X is halogen; R1WR4 are aliphatic group or the like) (where ammonium compounds are excluded).
