PURPOSE: To obtain methacrylamide industrially, easily and safely, by removing the heat while neutralizing methacrylamide sulfate with ammonia accompanied by oxygen or an inert gas containing the oxygen in an aqueous medium under reduced pressure.
CONSTITUTION: Methacrylamide sulfate is neutralized with ammonia in an aqueous medium to give methacrylamide. In the process, the pressure in a neutralizing tank 1 is kept at a given vacuum, usually 250mmHg or less, by a vacuum pump 7 connected with the bottom of a condenser 5, and ammonia is fed from a pipe 9, mixed with oxygen or an inert gas containing the oxygen, e.g. hydrogen or helium, from a pipe 11 in the course of the transfer and fed to the neutralizing tank 1. The oxygen or inert gas containing the oxygen accompanying the ammonia for the neutralization suppresses the occurrence of the polymerization of methacrylamide, and prevents the vibration and a roaring sound caused by the neutralization.
