Abstract:
PURPOSE:To deposit and grow titanium carbide whiskers of desired dimension on the surface of a base material and collect the grown whiskers, by treating a carbonaceous base material with an aqueous solution of a noble metallic salt, and supplying a mixed gas of a titanium halide vapor with CO thereto. CONSTITUTION:A carbonaceous base material is dipped in an aqueous solution of a noble metallic salt, e.g. platinum chloride, and dried. The resultant carbonaceous base material is then heated in an atmosphere of hydrogen, and a mixed gas of a volatile titanium halide, e.g. titanium terachloride, with CO is supplied thereto to deposit and grow titanium carbide whiskers on the surface of the base material. After the completion of the reaction, the whiskers and the base material are cooled to collect the titanium carbide whiskers deposited on the surface of the base material. In this method, titanium carbide whiskers having about (1-2mum)- about (20-30mum) average diameter and about (0.5-1mm.)- about (3-5mm.) average length are obtained by suitably adjusting the kind of the noble metallic element and the concentration of the aqueous solution of the noble metal.
