PURPOSE: After the thermal cleavage of a lower alkyl ester of chrysanthemum- monocarboxylic acid, the product is subjected to the reduction of its lower alkoxycarbonyl and the hydrogenation of its double bond to produce tetrahydrolavandulol useful as a perfume with industrial advantage.
CONSTITUTION: The thermal cleavage of a lower alkyl ester of chrysanthemum- monocarboxylic acid is carried out, preferably under normal or reduced pressure at 400W600°C to give a compound of formulaI(R is lower alkyl). Then, the lower alkoxycarbonyl of the product is reduced with an aluminum hydride or boron hydride compound, preferably in an inert solvent such as diethyl ether and the hydrogenation of the double bonds is effected in the presence of a catalyst such as Ni, Pd, Pt, or their oxide or their catalyst supported on a carrier to produce the compound of formula II. These process may be started from either of them.
