PURPOSE: To prevent ear breakage of coil by placing a gap forming member of specified shape on a concavity keeping off from an ear generated at the time of taking up a band steel coil and thereby keeping the ear off from a carrying tongue etc.

CONSTITUTION: An annular ear breakage preventing tool 9 having inner diameter greater than that of band steel coil 1 and outer diameter smaller than that of the coil 1 is prepared as a gap forming member. Said preventing tool 9 is placed on a concavity keeping off from projection 4 of irregular eared part generated at the time of coiling. Then, it is handled without directly bringing the projection 4 into contact with other bodies such as carrying tongue etc. Thus, ear breakage of the coil 1 is prevented and defective products can be reduced.
