PURPOSE: To function a device as a printer and a copier by using a liquid crystal platen to be made transparent when liquid crystal display is available and the display is in no display state as a platen for setting an original and displaying a required printed picture on the liquid crystal platen.

CONSTITUTION: A photosensitive drum 11, a charging corotron 12 for charging the surface of the drum 11, a lamp for irradiating the liquid crystal platen LCDP or an original OR set on the LCDP, and optical systems 14aW14c for exposing the surface of the drum 11 with reflected light are provided. A pattern generated from a pattern generator 22 in accordance with picture information corresponding to a printed picture inputted to an input device 20 is displayed as a liquid crystal pattern on the platen LCDP, and in case of no-display state, the liquid crystal is turned to the transparent state. The device is provided also with a developing device 15, a transfer corotron 16 for paper PA, a fixing unit 19, etc. Thus, the device can be functioned as a printer and a copier.
