NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (R1 is H; R2 is endo-OH or R1 and R2 together form O).
EXAMPLE: Spiro (cyclopenta-1,3'-norbornan-2'-one) of formula II.
USE: A perfumery component for perfume composition. It has strong perfume. The compound of formula II has woody or camphor-like perfume, and the compound of formula III has fruity and greenish perfume as well as the above woody and camphor-like perfume. Since the compound has a polycyclic aliphatic structure similar to the natural sesquiterpene alcohols, it is expected to have the pharmacological activities such as antiviral, antibacterial and plant hormone activities.
PREPARATION: A compound of formula I wherein R1 and R2 together form O (the compound of formula II) can be produced by reacting the norcamphor of formula IV with 1,4-dibromobutane of formula V in the presence of NaNH2. The product can be converted to another compound of formula I wherein R1 is H and R2 is endo-OH (the compound of formula III) by reducing with e.g. LiAlH4.
