Abstract:
The preparation of specified samples of mineral, geological and organic origin in the mining, ceramic, brick, cement, glass, coal and oil industries is carried out by X-ray or similar analysis. The material to be analysed is mixed with a flux in the form of a glassy material, such as lithium tetraborate and/or metaborate, and the materials and flux react and intersperse with one another to form a clear glass sample, essentially uniform, which is then poured into mould dishes and allowed to cool. Apparatus for carrying out the above procedure to ensure uniformity consists of crucibles (not shown), supported by crucible holders (40), preferably consisting of ring sections (42) and prongs (44) and situated above a line of burners (14). One set of prongs (44) is recessed into rail (24) and the other set of prongs (44) pass through holes (46) in rail (22). A backwards and forwards tilting motion in the sub-frame (70) in the longitudinal direction is effected by rod and cylinder assembly (176, 174) through adjacent rod (170) and parallel links (172) between rod (170) and prongs (44). At the same time, a backwards and forwards tilting motion is set up in the transverse direction by rod and cylinder assembly (102) through bracket (104) attached to the main-frame (50). The net result is a circular motion applied to each crucible for thorough mixing. The transverse or latter tilting mechanism also serves to empty the crucible of contents into a line of dishes (not shown) above a line of burners (12).
