Abstract:
Provided is a projection apparatus in which a high contrast projection image can be obtained without reducing the brightness. The projection apparatus (1) is comprised of an illumination optical system (19), a DMD (24) having a rectangular image display area, and a projection optical system (20) which has a diaphragm (40) and which projects light modulated by the DMD (24) onto a projecting surface on which an image is to be projected. The illumination optical system (19) is comprised of a light source (11), a light gathering optical system (12), a rod integrator having a rectangular sectional shape, a relay optical system (18), an optical element (13) which makes the convergence angle of a light flux incident upon the rod integrator (15) in a direction corresponding to the major side direction of the image display area smaller than that in the minor side direction. The rod integrator (15) has an emission surface which is substantially analogous in shape to and optically conjugate with the image display area of the DMD (24). An aperture of the diaphragm (40) has a planar shape elongated in a direction corresponding to the minor side direction of the image display area of the DMD (24).
