PURPOSE: To obtain a 1-(2-benzimidazoyl)-1,5-diazacyclooctane derivative which is useful as a therapeutic agent for bronchial asthma, allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, pollinosis, urtication or the like because it has antihistaminic and antiallergic actions.
CONSTITUTION: A 1-(2-benzimidazolyl)-1,5-diazacyclooctane derivative of formula I (X is H, halogen; Y is H, OH, lower alkoxy, lower alkylsulfonyl) and its pharmacologically permissible salts, for example, 1-[1-(4-fluorophenylmethyl)-1H- benzimidazol-2-yl]-5(2-naphthylethyl)-1,5-diazacyclooctane. The compound of formula I is obtained by reaction of 1-(2-benzimidazolyl)-1,5-diazacyclooctane derivative or its acid adduct with a halide of formula III in an inert solvent in the presence of a base.
