NEW MATERIAL:A compound of formula I (Bn is benzyl; cofiguration of the 3a carbon is S or R).
EXAMPLE: ( 1R,3aS,4S,9bS )-1-Benzyloxymethyl-4-methyl-7-dimethyl-5,6,8-trioxa-9- oxo-1,3,3a,4,5,6,7,8,9,9b-decahydronaphtho[1,2-c]furan.
USE: It is used as a synthetic intermediate of heteroyohinbine alkaloids including ajmalicine or an intermediate of 2-alkoxycarbonyl-8-methyl-6-oxo-7-oxa decahydroisoquinoline, which is used as an antiarrhythmic or a remedy for Raynaud's syndrome.
PREPARATION: 1,2-Diol of formula II is allowed to react with sodium meta- periodate and the glyceraldehyde of formula III is allowed to react with Meldrum's acid.
