PURPOSE: To obtain the subject new compound useful as a new type liquid crystal compound having dihydrobenzene and two fluorine atoms in the core part, indicating positive dielectric anisotropy and having high mutual solubility with a wide variety of liquid crystal compounds.
CONSTITUTION: A 1-dihydrophenyl-3,5-difluorobenzene derivative shown by formula I [R1 is H, 1-10C alkyl or transcyclohexyl containing 1-10C alkyl at the 4-position; A is 1,4-dihydrophenylene; R2 is H, cyano, halogen, 1-10C alkyl, 1-10C alkoxy, carbonyl. or COO-B-R' (B is 1,4-phenylene or 1,4-cyclohexenylene; R' is cyano, halogen, alkyl or alkoxy)] such as 1-(hydroxy-4-pentylcyclohexenyl)-3,5- difluorobenzene. Among compounds of formula I, a compound shown by formula Ia where R2 is H or halogen is obtained by reacting a compound of formula IV with a compound of formula III prepared from a compound of formula II.
