NEW MATERIAL:1-Tolyl-2-phenylpropane of formula.
USE: Useful as a solvent of dye for pressure-sensitive recording paper. The compound is effective to improve the characteristics of conventional solvent of dye for pressure-sensitive recording paper and is useful as a modifying solvent. For example 1,2-di-p-tolylethane is crystallizable easily, and a pressure-sensitive recording paper containing the compound as a solvent is inadequate for the use in winter season because of the precipitation of the dye solvent and the lowering of the initial rate of color development, however, the addition of the present compound enables the prevention of crystallization and the increase in the initial color development rate. The titled compound is a low-voltatile substance which is liquid at normal temperature, insoluble in water and stable to acid and alkali.
PREPARATION: The compound of formula can be produced by dispersing ethylbenzene and xylene in an aqueous medium and heating the dispersion in the presence of an oxidizing agent such as sodium peroxodisulfate preferably at 150W180°C.
