Abstract:

PURPOSE: To provide the subject novel compound useful as an anti-inflammatory agent.

CONSTITUTION: A compound of the formula [R is H, 1-carboxy-2-(3,4- dihydroxyphenyl)ethyl], e.g. 1,2-dihydro-6,7-dihydroxy-1-(3,4- dihydroxyphenyl)-3-[carboxy-2-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)ethyloxycarbonyl]- naphthalene-2-carboxylic acid. The compound of the formula is produced by immersing Mentha haplocalyx BRI Q. in acetone-water mixture, distilling away acetone from the extraction solution under reduced pressure, and subsequently treating the remaining aqueous solution by column chromatography.
