Abstract:
PURPOSE: To produce a new compound useful for preparation of intermediates such as dyestuffs, herbicides and pharmaceutical drugs.
CONSTITUTION: The compound expressed by the formula I (R1a, R1b, R3a and R3b are each lower alkyl; R1a and R1b or R3a and R3b may be joined respectively with a cyclobutane ring to form a spiro-bonded ring) such as 1,1,3,3- tetramethoxy-cyclobutane is obtained, for example, by converting 1,3- cyclobutanedione in the presence of an acidic catalyst with use of orthoformate ester of the formula II (Ra and Rb are each R1a; R is lower alkyl).
