NEW MATERIAL:A compound shown by formula I (R1 is ≤20C straight-chain alkyl; X is H or halogen; R2 is ≤20C straight-chain alkyl or asymmetric carbon- containing alkyl; C* is asymmetric carbon; l, m an n are 0 or 1, n=1 when l=0 and l=1 when n=0).
EXAMPLE: (S)-2-Methylbutyl (S)-2-(4'-hydroxy-4-biphenyloxy)propionate.
USE: an electro-optical display material. Especially usable as a ferroelectric liquid crystal display element having excellent response and memory and useful as the most suitable material for high-speed moving image such as television.
PREPARATION: An optically active 2-chloropropionate shown by formula II (COOM is carboxylate) is reacted with a 3'-substituted 4'-alkoxy 4- hydroxybiphenyl shown by formula III to give a carboxylic acid shown by formula VI, which is then reacted with an alcohol to give a compound shown by formula I when n=0.
