PURPOSE: To obtain the subject new compound useful as a herbicide or a plant- growth regulating agent.
CONSTITUTION: This new compound is 2-aroylcyclohexanedione of formula I [A is a 1-6C alkylene; R1 is phenyl or 5- or 6-membered hetaryl each of which has at least one and at most four substituents such as a halogen and cyano, or the like; R2 to R5 are each independently H or a 1-4C alkyl; R6 is a (1-4C alkoxy)carbonyl; R7 is a 1-4C alkyl; with the proviso that R1 is not mono- or dihalophenyl], e.g. 2-(2-chloro-4-methylsulfonylbenzoyl)-5-(1-methylthiocyclopropyl)- cyclohexane-1,3-dione. The compound of formula I is obtained, for example, by allowing a cyclohexanedione of formula II to react with an acid derivative of formula III (L is a nucleophilic eliminable group such as chloride, bromide and cyanide) in the presence of a base to provide an enol ester of formula IV and further converting the obtained enol ester of formula IV in the presence of a cyanide and the base.
