PURPOSE: To provide 2-ethylanthraquinone little in affections against coexisting chemical agents or devices and materials used therefor and substantially not containing a chlorinated compound.
CONSTITUTION: 2-Ethylanthraquinon having a chlorine content of ≤1ppm and substantially not containing a chlorinated compound. This 2-ethylanthraquinone not containing the chlorinated compound is produced by mixing and dispersing phthalic acid anhydride in ethylbenzene in an amount of 5-20 pts.wt. per 1 pt.wt. of the compound, adding aluminum chloride in an amount of 1.7-2.0 pts.wt. per 1 pt.wt. of the compound to the dispersion at 0-40°C, reacting the phthalic acid anhydride with the ehylbenzene at the temperature, and subsequently cyclizing the obtained 2-(4-ethylbenzoyl)benzoic acid in the presence of 2-30% fuming sulfuric acid in an amount of 2-10 pts.wt. per 1 pt.wt. of the compound. The 2-ethylanthraquinone is suitable as a dyestuff intermediate, a polymerization initiator of UV light-curable resins or UV light-curable inks or a medium for producing hydrogen peroxide by an anthraquinone method.
