PURPOSE: To provide novel compounds useful for liquid crystal display elements, electrooptical display elements and a matrix liquid crystal display containing a specific medium.

CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula I [wherein R represents (substituted) 1-18C alkyl or alkenyl], for example 1-[trans-4-(trans-4-propylcyclohexyl)- cyclohexyl]-2-[P-trifluoromethylphenyl]ethane is obtained by reacting a compound of formula III [wherein Y1 represents (CH2)n-Y3 or the like; Y2 represents hydrogen; Y3 represents OH or the like; n is 0 to 2] with a compound of formula R-(A1-Z1)o-A2-Z2 (wherein Z2 represents CH2OH, OH or the like) using a medium containing a compound of formula II [wherein A1 and A2 are each (substituted) 1,4-phenylene or the like; Z1 and Z2 are each -CO-O-, -CH2CH2- or the like; o is 0 to 2; n is 0 to 7].
