NEW MATERIAL:A compound shown by the formulaI(R1 is arylcarbonyloxy or aralkylcarbonyl).
EXAMPLE: A compound shown by the formula VII.
USE: An antibacterial agent.
PROCESS: For example, a 4'-deoxy derivative shown by the formula II having hydroxyl groups protected by acetal type protecting groups at the groups R2 and R5 is treated in anhydrous ethanol in the presence of pyridinium p-toluenesulfonate to remove the protecting groups first. The reaction product shown by the formula III is reacted with a lower carboxylic acid anhydride such as acetic anhydride, etc. in a nonproton solvent such as acetonitrile, etc. to acylate the hydroxyl group at 2' position. The prepared compound shown by the formula IV is reacted with benzoyl chloride in a basic solvent such as pyridine, etc. and the reaction product shown by the formula V is heated with methanol to remove the protecting group, and the prepared reaction product shown by the formula VI is trated with an acid in a nonproton solvent to remove the protecting group of an aldehyde group.
