Abstract:

NEW MATERIAL: A compound of formula I (formula II is formulae III, IV, etc.).

EXAMPLE: A compound of formula V.

USE: Intermediates for producing 24,25-dihydroxycholesterol or hydroxylated vitamin D3 useful for treatment of calcium metabolism disorders.

PROCESS: The subject compound is obtained, for example, by reacting dissolving a 24-carbon-24-alcohol steroid in methylene chloride, mixing the solution with a methylene chloride solution of chromium trioxide-pyridine complex for oxidation to an aldehyde of formula VII, and treating the aldehyde with p- toluenesulfonic acid for deprotection in a mixed solvent of water and a water- miscible alcohol to remove 3α,5-cyclo group (i-steroid) which is the protecting group, from the compound of formula VII.
