Abstract:
PURPOSE: To provide a new optically active compound emitting intense, excellent and unique sandalwood-like fragrance and useful as a perfumery composition for various cosmetics, aromatic agents and other hygienic and sanitary materials.
CONSTITUTION: This compound is (2R)-2-methyl-4-(2,2,3-trimethyl-3-cyclopenten-1- yl)-1-butanol expressed by formula I. The compound of formula I can be produced by the asymmetric hydrogenation of (A) 2-methyl-4-(2,2,3-trimethyl-3- cyclopenten-1-yl)-2-buten-1-ol of formula II in the presence of (B) a catalyst consisting of a ruthenium-optically active phosphine complex (e.g. a compound of formula, RuxHyClz(CBP)2(NEt3)w {CBP is a t-phosphine of formula III [R1 is a (substituted)phenyl or a (substituted)3-8C cycloalkyl, etc.]; Et is ethyl; x=2, z=4 and w=1 when y=0 and x=z=1 and w=0 when y=1}.
