NEW MATERIAL:A 3-[4'-(trans-4"-alkylcyclohexyl) cyclohexen-1'-yl] chlorobenzene expressed by formulaI.
USE: A liquid crystal composition, having the small positive dielectric anisotropy and low viscosity, capable of improving the display characteristics at a low temperature, and useful for enlarging the nematic temperature range.
PROCESS: A 4-(trans-4'-alkylcyclohexyl) cyclohexanol expressed by formula II is oxidized with chromic anhydride to give a compound expressed by formula III. On the other hand, 3-bromobenzene is reacted with Mg to afford 3-chlorophenylmagnesium bromide expressed by formula IV, which is then reacted with the compound expressed by formula III to give a compound expressed by formula V. The resultant compound expressed by formula V is then dehydrated in the presence of potassium hydrogensulfate as a catalyst to afford the compound expressed by formulaI.
