To produce the subject new compound which is a reductively hydrogenated substance of 1,2,4-tricyanobutane (TCB) useful as an epoxy resin curing agent, a rust preventing agent, an agrochemical, a urethane, a polymeric flocculant, etc.

1,2,4-Tricyanobutane (TCB) is hydrogenated in the liquid phase in the presence of a solvent (≥3C alcohols or ethers, etc.) and a Raney cobalt as a catalyst to afford 3-aminomethyl-1,6-diaminohexane (AMDH). The reaction is usually carried out at about 50-200°C reactional temperature under about 1-20 MPa reactional pressure. When ammonia is added, the rate of reaction can be improved without changing the selectivity for the product.
