NEW MATERIAL: A compound of formula I [wherein R1 and R2 are each H, a 1-8C alkyl, a 4-8C cycloalkyl, a cyano-2-4C alkyl, a (substituted) phenyl or the like, or they together with the N may form a five-membered or six- membered hetero ring; R3 is H, F, Cl, a 1 or 2C alkyl or the like; and A is naphthyl or formula II (wherein X is H, F, Cl, a 1-5C alkyl or the like; and (n) is 1 or 2); with the proviso that R1 and R2 can not be methyl groups simultaneously when A is phenyl].
USE: Useful as an intermediate in the synthesis of triphenylcyclopentadiene dyes or salts thereof.
PREPARATION: An aldehyde of formula III is condensed with an arylketone of formula IV at 20-60°C in the presence of a condensing agent (sodium methanolate) in a solvent (e.g. an alcohol) or a mixture thereof with water to obtain a compound of formula I.
