NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (R is OH bonded in the form of exo or endo).
EXAMPLE: 3-Exo-hydroxy-endo-tricyclo[6.2.1.02.7]undecane.
USE: A perfume component of a perfumery composition having strong fragrance. The compound of formula II has menthol-like and the compound of formula IIIhas woody and camphor-like fragrance mixed with slight patchouli-like flavor, and is useful for the flavoring of lavender-type perfumery. Since the compound has a polycyclic aliphatic structure similar to natural sesquiterpene alcohols, the compound is expected to have pharmacological activities such as antiviral, antibacterial and plant-hormone activities.
PREPARATION: The compound of formula I wherein R is OH bonded in exo-form (the compound of formula II) is produced by dehydrating 2-exo-hydroxy-endo- tricyclo[6.2.1.02.7]undecane of formula IV, and hydroborating the product with B2H6 and H2O2.
