EXAMPLE: 6-[ 1-( 4-Chlorophenoxy )-1-methylethyl ]-4-methoxy-5,6-dihydro-2H-pyran-2-one.
USE: A medicine having an anti-anxiety action.
PROCESS: A compound of the formula CH3COCH2COOR (R is alkyl) is reacted with a metallic hydride compound, e.g. NaH, and the resultant product is then reacted with an alkul metallic compound, e.g. n-butyl lithium, in an inert solvent, e.g. THF, to give a compound of the formula CH2COCHCOOR, which is then subjected to the addition reaction with a compound of formula II at a low temperature to afford a compound of formula III. The resultant compound of formula III is further hydrolyzed with an alkali and subjected to the ring closing reaction in the presence of an acidic catalyst, e.g. HCl, to give a compound of formula IV, which is then alkoxylated to afford the compound of formula I in which R4 is H.
