PURPOSE: To provide novel compounds having strong and selective herbicidal activity and useful as herbicides.
CONSTITUTION: Novel 4-cyanophenylimino heterocycles are represented by formula I (wherein R1 is H or a halogen; R2 is a halogen, cyano or the like; A is alkanediyl or alkenediyl; E is N or C; G is N or H or alkyl via an exo single bond or C bonded to O or S via an exo double bond; and provided that when E is N, A is not methylene), e.g. 9-(4-cyano-2-fluoro-5-isopro-poxyphenylimino)-8- thia-1,6-diazabicyclo[4,3,0]nonan-7-one. The compounds are obtained, e.g. by reacting a substituted thio-carbonylamino compound of formula II with an oxidizing agent or a dehydrating agent (e.g. oxygen, sodium persulfate or the like), if necessary, in the presence of a reaction auxiliary such as sodium hydroxide and a diluent such as methylene chloride, preferably at 20-120°C. Further, the starting compounds of formula II are novel compounds.
