To obtain a new compound useful as a herbicide, a growth-regulating agent of plants and a bactericide.
This compound is expressed by the formula [X is F, Cl, etc.; R is a 1-10C alkyl, phenyl (substituted with a 1-8C alkyl, a 1-8C alkoxy, etc.), etc.; Y is N(R1)R2 (R1 is H, a 1-8C alkyl, etc.; R2 is H, a 1-8C haloalkyl, etc.), NHCH2CO2 (or a 1-3C alkyl), etc.; R7 is H, a 1-4C alkyl, etc.], and a 4-chloro-4,4- difluoro-2-ethoxymethylene-3-oxobutanoic acid ethyl ester is exemplified. The compound of the formula is obtained by hydrolyzing a 4-haloalkyl-substituted pyrimidine-5-carboxylate under an alkaline condition to form a 4-haloalkyl- substituted pyrimidine-5-carboxylic acid, which is derivatized to an acid chloride by a chlorination agent, condensed with an amine derivative under a basic condition to form an amide, and formed to imidoyl by a chlorination agent, and further reacting with a nucleophilic reagent 'Y' such as N or S.
