Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain a new compd. useful in synthesis of liquid crystalline compounds and displays.
CONSTITUTION: 4-Hydroxy-2,3,5-trifluorobenzoic acid of the formula is provided. The compd. is obtained by reacting 2,3,4,5-tetrafluorobenzoic acid with a basic compd. (such as NaOH) dissolved and/or suspended in water at 50-180°C, adding, if desired, a fluoride scavenger (such as silicon dioxide), and bringing pH of the resulting reaction mixture to 0 to 6 by addition of an acid (such as hydrochloric acid). The basic compd. is used at a conc. of 3-50 wt.% based on the aq. soln. or suspension and in such an amount that 3-10 moles of hydroxide ions can be used per mole of 2,3,4,5-tetrafluorobenzoic acid.
